My B-School Story
I am a fan of social media. I say this because it’s an easy way to engage. As a salesperson and a retail manager most of my life, I engaged for a living. However, until just 4 years ago, I didn’t even know what the likes of Facebook was about. Little did I know that this valuable medium would allow me to engage in such a way that I was able to create and grow my own personal business. From someone that spent most of her life closed into four walls and a roof to do my job, I now have an online business that is limitless.
“Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”
In my previous career, I spent most of my working days in a brick and mortar environment. Mind you, it was a luxurious environment, as I was in the luxury fashion field. Though I was successful within the industry for many years; when it came down to it, my passions were always elsewhere.
It was one of those mediums I fell into and became good at it, but never inherently satisfying. Yet, I didn’t act upon my true passions for years, sidetracked by a very good paycheck that replaced true fulfillment.
I realized that I was nearing the end of my career when during one of my meetings with my superior, who I think was starting to see my lack of want to progress any further, asked me that annoying age-old question, “where do you see yourself in 5 years?”. I was no spring chicken, and the fact that I was inquired regarding made me upset. I’ve been in the business 20 years, that’s something you ask someone on day one.
Almost 20 years in high-end fashion industry
However, it was a gut check, and the first thing that came to mind was that I didn’t want to take his or the place of anyone that had a higher position than me. I come to realize that I had gone as far up on the ladder as I wanted. Luckily, soon after that, I was laid off and I closed the book on a career that spanned nearly 20 years. I say luckily because it was this that served as the impetus for my creating a new career online.
I didn’t know anything about online businesses
This didn’t come easy. As I mentioned at the beginning, I didn’t even know what function Facebook would have in my life. Moreover, I belong to a generation in which a good percentage don’t necessarily have a high aptitude for the tech and online world. Navigating through a smart device or computer was not second nature per se.
However, though intimidating, I knew this was the way the world of business was going and if I was going to make a success of my new career path, it would have to be in the world wide web, versus 4 walls. Now was the time! I gained further security when I started to see retail moving from people buying in stores to online.
My passion is food and travel
The true passions I have had most of life is for food and travel. Like any dreamer, I relegated myself to reading books and magazines on the topics and watched every show or movie in the genre, and of course saved all my vacation days to get a taste of the dream every so often. I knew there were many of those just like me
So when I finally took the leap, it was important to me that I create a vehicle that would make a difference to people like myself. I wanted to inspire.
I found Marie Forleo’s B-School
Then I found B-School. An online “business school” started by Marie Forleo, who had experiences that somewhat mirrored mine. The cost was something to consider, as I wasn’t working anymore. But I knew I had to invest in myself.
I wanted to create a business that came off as professional as opposed to a hobby. I wanted to be relevant. Most of all I wanted to create a business that would allow me to eat, travel, and have meaningful experiences and quality time with my family (my truest passion). So, I decided to purchase the course.
Dish Our Town, A Family Food and Travel Blog
Dish Our Town, my Food, and Travel blog is now almost 4 years and going. In those 4 years, my family and I have also traveled the world full-time for a year and was able to work and continue to grow the business throughout without having to go into an office. There were moments in which I would be typing on my computer, looking out onto beautiful century-old cobbled streets in Europe, or at a cafe near the shores in Southeast Asia. I felt I had accomplished my dream.
Challenged by the Curve of Learning
I also have had my share of trials through the process, to say the least. I was still challenged by the curve of learning and we had to get used to budgeting and making less than we ever had. But I’d like to think that I had inspired people to see the world and open up their palates through my endeavor.
Upon coming back, our business became a family commitment, not just mine but also my husband’s, and continues to grow. Yes, we had to step back into the workplace to help fund this project, but with new eyes knowing that it’s not the end all. Which I will tell you makes all the difference.
Courage to Start and Not Fear What I Didn’t Know
Currently, we run two online businesses which have become the majority of our income. I have found ways to market and sell effectively online. I’m by no means an overnight success story, nor am I nearly where I want to be. However, I wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far, moreover even had the guts to start if I hadn’t taken the B-School courses. I continue to refer to them with every step.
More and more, individuals who are in the same shoes I wore a few years back, have approached me and have asked me how I had gone about changing my life. Many of these, of course, are people I have known in my previous industry, who are looking to step into the present market, as the brick and mortar retail landscape continues to antiquate.
There are also those who are already in the travel and food industry that haven’t made the leap to embrace an online facet of their businesses.
This is my B-School Story
All I ever tell them is my story. How I knew absolutely nothing about running a website, but through inspiration, I set off on the journey. A journey anyone with some guts can easily take. If you fall into this category, take this journey that will make you and your business relevant now and in the future. Most of all, actually doing something that you love.
Ask Yourself Where You See Yourself in a Few Years?
Ask yourself where you see yourself in a few years, and if the answer is to work for yourself in something you have a passion for. Then look no further. I assure you, I’ll hold your hand as much as you want through the process.
Don’t consider me a mentor, but a friend who got you going on your dream and not someone 10 steps ahead but someone walking along with you who remembers exactly how hard those first few steps were. We can even connect through social media… haha.
